Implantable Sensors, Control IQ+ Glow Up, and Dexcom Finally Catches Up: Newest Diabetes Tech in 2025

If the phrase “newest diabetes technology” has you rolling your eyes because, let’s face it, it usually means “a slightly different sensor with a new sticker,” buckle up. This isn’t your average regurgitated press release. I’m a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and a person with diabetes who is deeply skeptical of hype. Here’s a quick five-minute update on diabetes tech that might actually be worth your attention.

Eversense Gets a Twiist (Literally)

Ever heard of the Eversense? Probably not, because while it’s been around, bigger brands have overshadowed it. It’s an implantable continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that sits under your skin (ew), lasts for an entire year (UM WHAT), and has a removable, rechargeable transmitter that snaps onto a silicone adhesive. Sounds lit, right? Except no one’s been using it because finding a trained professional to insert it is as difficult as scoring Cowboy Carter tickets. Plus, it requires daily calibrations, which can be a dealbreaker for most.

But here’s where it gets spicy: Eversense is teaming up with Sequel Medtech’s upcoming Twiist insulin pump, creating a hybrid system that might finally make Eversense cool enough for mainstream adoption. If an implantable CGM that lasts a year and integrates with an automated insulin pump sounds good to you, maybe it’s time to reconsider the Eversense.

Tandem Control-IQ+ Has a Glow Up

Tandem’s Control-IQ software just got a major upgrade. They’ve added temp basal rates and extended bolus options that go up to eight hours (I’m determined to find a use for the 8 hour time frame). This update is approved for kids as young as 2 years old and for adults with Type 2 diabetes. Inclusivity win.

Quick refresher:

Let’s refresh our memories on temp basals and extended boluses (and if you have no actual memory of learning these things, check out my Bolus Busters Course)

Temp basals let you adjust your insulin delivery during activities (think exercise, stress, or hanky panky) without messing with your usual settings.

Extended bolus (it’s actually a combination bolus) allows you to spread out your insulin delivery over time for those tricky meals—pizza, restaurant feasts, or high-fat, high-protein food marathons. These boluses are also useful for people with slowed gastric emptying (gastroparesis, GLP-1 use, Symlin use, etc.

This gives you flexibility that doesn’t just stick to a one-size-fits-all formula. Whether it’s a surprise dinner party or a hormone-fueled rollercoaster, Control-IQ’s new features help you roll with it.

Dexcom, where you been loca?

Dexcom finally caught up to the competition by launching a 15-day G7 sensor for adults (ages 18+), stretching sensor wear time to its longest yet. Sure, it’s longer than before, but let’s not pretend it’s groundbreaking—Libre’s been doing 14 days from the start. And while the G7 has improved to an 8% MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference which is a measurement that can actually be easily manipulated based on study structure), Freestyle Libre 3 still beats it with a 7.8% MARD and a more accessible list price.

In short: Dexcom’s latest isn’t the holy grail of accuracy, but it’s a step up for those already loyal to the brand.

TL;DR Newest Diabetes Tech Update for the ADHD Crowd

  • Eversense + Twiist Pump = year-long CGM with automated delivery potential.

  • Tandem Control-IQ+ now offers temp basal rates and extended bolus up to 8 hours. AND your toddler and type 2 friends can enjoy it too.

  • Dexcom G7 finally goes 15 days, but Libre’s still more accurate and affordable (classic).

So there you have it—the newest diabetes technology that’s actually worth keeping an eye on. Feel free to skip the shiny marketing buzz and focus on the stuff that can genuinely make your diabetes life less of a daily scavenger hunt.
